This original cottage, in the northern suburb of Reservoir, was long overdue for a renovation and extension. An original 2 bedroom Bungalow with one bathroom lounge /dining and kitchen/laundry lean-too was very typical of the inter-wars era of the 20s. A small, purpose-built, no-frills cottage.
Even though these old bungalows can be quite basic they have many redeeming features, such as high ceilings, generous spaces, timber floors and quaint period character. With this in mind, the owners were keen to preserve and enhance the original cottage and extend new living spaces in a totally different yet sympathetic modern style.
Professional couple Sarah and Ross had been living in this neatly kept but very outdated and almost original home for some years. They approached Capital Building with their own architect plans for a complete period renovation of the front, original part of the house and the addition of a contemporary extension at the rear.
As a designer-builder, Capital Building rarely build other designers extensions.
However, on this occasion, there was a good relationship with the client and appreciation for the ‘Moody Architecture’ design.
It is a well resolved and good quality design and in accord with Capital Building design and efficiency principles. As the photos show the old part of the house is new again containing 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with walk-in robes and side, light court, entrance, with lots of storage and cabinetry. The whole house was lifted about 500mm and restumped and new floors laid. Walls and ceilings replastered and repaired, new roofing, new front porch and a complete repaint.
The new contemporary extension to the rear consists of a study with large open plan kitchen /meals and living area onto an alfresco area at the rear. On the whole, it looks and feels like a new home with nothing left untouched.
The owners requested to engage their own Kitchen cabinet maker, heating and cooling contractor, and landscaping. Capital Building assisted and worked in with the owner’s trades. Capital Building will, under certain conditions, work in with owners trades, as long as it is to both Capital Buildings and the owners benefit. “Win Win” as they say in the classics.
